What are the requirements to become a member? To become a member, you must reside in Coppell (or attending a Coppell school) and you must be in or entering grades 9-12. For younger students, CYWA offers a mentorship with a high schooler who can offer you feedback, guidance, and support with your writing.

Will I be penalized for not attending a meeting? There is no penalty for not attending a monthly meeting or writers group. Constant attendance is not required to be a member. However, if an individual continues to be absent, an officer will contact them to ask if they are still interested in being a member.

Do I have to be a creative writer to join? No! All writing - nonfiction, editorials, prose, poetry, and more - is accepted and included!

Are there any rules I need to follow? We have six main rules we ask you to agree to follow before you complete your Google Form registration. They are as follows: 1: We ask you to act maturely and with respect during a meeting. 2: No cursing, bullying, harassment, or discrimination will be tolerated within the association or during a meeting. 3: All viewpoints will be respected. 4: Criticism given will always be constructive, never rude or belittling. (Remember that criticism is meant to help you improve and should not be taken personally. If you feel like criticism given to you violated this rule, please share what it was and why you think so with an officer.) 5: Be mindful of people’s privacy regarding their writing. Do not share what they’re writing and especially not their writing outside of your writer’s group without the writer’s express permission. If you have witnessed someone violating one or more of these rules, you should report them and their behavior to an officer to be handled accordingly. If a member violates one or more of these rules, they are subject to a review of their behavior by the officers and may be forced to leave the association.

What are the specific activities in this club?1- During the group meetings, we share work to recieve feedback. You can bring anything that you need help with! An extended version of this can be found through our shared drive for feedback! 2- To work on specific writing skills, we offer mini workshops that target grammar, vocabulary, imagery, sentence structure, and formatting. This will help all of us grow into better writing styles and fine tune some rough skills. (Since the school offers us Membean and NoRedInk, we highly recommend practicing these skills on there!) 3- For people looking for a more in-depth experience, we offer a mentorship program! Anyone who signs up will be paired up to a person who teaches you about writing one-on-one.
